The Positive Effects of Random Acts of Kindness
Random acts of kindness can be described as selfless acts of humanity shown towards others, without any desire of reciprocation or payment. We have all heard of the power of positivity and how it can affects us on a cellular level. Selfless acts of kindness can potentially have a similar impact on both the receiver and giver of kindness. Studies have even demonstrated that acts of kindness can alter brain chemistry and trigger the production of serotonin and dopamine, the “feel good” neurotransmitters in the brain. The receiver of the kindness experiences gratitude, appreciation and a felt sense of being valued. After doing a good deed, the giver/doer often experiences a moment of euphoria, which psychologists refer to as, “helper’s high;” it is an uplifting positive sense of self worth. Everyday life provides many opportunities to brighten someone’s day with a smile, an act of kindness or a positive word. One simple act of kindness that we can all do everyday is to take the time to truly listening to someone with the intention of understanding them and validating their concerns. Two of my favorite quotes associated with acts of kindness are, Guard well within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness. ~ George Sand, and Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless ~ Mother Teresa. What is Love?
Love is a miraculous gift that we give and receive from God, one another and from life itself. It can be an overpowering emotion, a wonderful experience, an act of kindness, or a peaceful way of being. That is my abbreviated definition of what love means to me, but there is no one acceptable meaning of the word “Love,” as it can mean many different things to many different people and may be influenced by a variety of factors. For some people Love can be indescribable.
